GMI Construction Group has begun preparatory works ahead of a major renovation and restoration of Huddersfield’s historic George Hotel.
The Grade II* listed hotel, vacant since 2013, is being upgraded to create a contemporary 108-room hotel, alongside a bar, restaurant, gym and conference facilities. Once complete, the landmark building will be operated by Radisson Hotel Group, becoming the first Radisson RED hotel across Yorkshire and the Humber.
GMI has been closely involved throughout the design stage of the project, working alongside Kirklees Council, which acquired the building in August 2020, and key stakeholders to balance heritage preservation with improved commercial viability.
The revised plans were approved in October 2025 as part of the Huddersfield Blueprint regeneration programme, with main construction works due to commence in February.
It will carefully preserve the hotel’s historic stone façade, maintaining its distinctive frontage on St Georges Square. To the rear block, there will be two new, set-back storeys of accommodation, sensitively designed to respect the original architecture while delivering high-quality modern space. The approach blends contemporary construction with heritage restoration at the heart of the town centre.
Preparatory works are now underway, with extended hoardings installed along John William Street to facilitate scaffolding works, allowing dismantling works to start on the west side of the structure.
Ed Weston, GMI’s Regional Director for Yorkshire, said: “As a Yorkshire company, we are proud to be delivering this landmark project that will restore an important part of Huddersfield’s heritage while supporting long-term economic growth and community revitalisation. The transformation of The George Hotel reflects a shared commitment to exceptional delivery, combining precision, care and respect for the building’s historic significance.”
Cllr Graham Turner, the council’s Cabinet Member for Finance and Regeneration, added: “The transformation of the George Hotel is one of the major projects of the Huddersfield Blueprint and regenerating the town centre. It is a gateway building into the town which, when renovated, can boost our local economy and be perfectly placed for visitors to stay.”
