GMI Construction Group PLC has been named as the Contractor of the Year at the prestigious Construction News Awards.

Presented at gala dinner held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London, the award recognised GMI’s solid and responsible growth, impressive portfolio of delivered and pipeline projects, and its culture and forward-thinking approach to doing business in the modern construction industry.

The CN Award for Contractor of the Year (under £500m turnover) reflects the considerable progress GMI has made in recent years that sets it apart from others in the industry.

Focused on key regions, Yorkshire, North West, Midlands and the North East, GMI has been making a practical and tangible contribution to levelling up the economy with a series of economically important schemes in industrial and commercial sectors.

As a result, has achieved an order book of £570m of secured work driving a turnover of £380m for 2021/22 and a forecast turnover for 2022/23 of £450m.

Its projects include extensive residential apartment schemes in Derby and Manchester and large-scale office and commercial, manufacturing and logistics sector developments in locations including Leeds, Goole, Durham and South Shields.

The award also endorses GMI’s approach to maintaining strong relationships with its clients and supply chain, safety, and sustainability, as well as its strategy to ‘do things differently’.

Its quality and people focused culture is demonstrated by a series of activities that promotes career developments and community engagement with projects such local prison engagement, signing up to the armed forces and care leavers covenants and backing the Women in Construction campaign.

Lee Powell, CEO of GMI Construction Group PLC, said: “Achieving this award is the pinnacle of our year and is testament to the exceptional work of everyone within GMI, from those involved in the delivery of our amazing portfolio of projects through to those responsible for evolving our culture and approach to business, which sets us apart in the industry.

“The CN Awards are highly respected and helps companies build even stronger reputations and relationships with customers based on quality and trust.  As a company highly active in regions that have been identified through the levelling up agenda to help unlock future and additional economic value, we are proud that our efforts have been recognised as we continue on our sustainable growth strategy.”
